What is an online Excel editor?

An online Excel editor is a spreadsheet program that runs in your web browser instead of being installed on your computer. Excel Editor Online opens Microsoft Excel workbooks (.xlsx and .xls), OpenDocument spreadsheets (.ods) and CSV files, lets you change cells, formulas and formatting across multiple worksheets, and saves the result as a new Excel file. Because the whole editor runs on your device, it is a fast and private way to edit Excel files without Microsoft Office or an account.

Features of our free online Excel editor

150+ Excel formulas and functions

SUM, AVERAGE, IF, VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, INDEX and MATCH, SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, TEXT and date functions recalculate instantly, with formula autocomplete and argument hints as you type.

Cell formatting that carries over

Fonts, bold and italics, text and fill colours, borders, number and date formats, alignment, wrapped text, merged cells, column widths and frozen panes are kept when you save as XLSX.

Sort, filter, find and replace

Sort a range A to Z, filter rows by value, find and replace text across the worksheet, and fill series or formulas down by dragging the fill handle.

Multiple worksheets

Add, rename, duplicate, reorder and delete sheets. Formulas can reference other sheets, and cell references update automatically when you insert or delete rows and columns.

Private and secure by design

Your spreadsheet is read and edited on your device and autosaved only in this browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so confidential data stays with you.

Works like Microsoft Excel

Familiar keyboard shortcuts, copy and paste to and from Excel or Google Sheets, undo and redo, a formula bar, a name box and a full-screen mode make the editor feel instantly familiar.

Open XLSX, XLS, ODS and CSV

Import Excel workbooks, OpenDocument spreadsheets and comma-, semicolon- or tab-separated CSV files, then download an .xlsx workbook or export the sheet as CSV.

No install, no account

There is nothing to download and nothing to sign up for. Open the page and start editing – the free online spreadsheet editor is ready in seconds.

Edit Excel on any device

Use it on Windows, macOS, ChromeOS and Linux in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, and on iPhone, iPad and Android phones and tablets.

How to edit an Excel file online in 4 steps

Editing an XLSX file in your browser takes less than a minute.

  1. Open your spreadsheet

Select Open and choose an .xlsx, .xls, .ods or .csv file, or drag it onto the editor. You can also start from a blank workbook with New.

  2. Edit cells and formulas

Click a cell and type. Start with = to enter a formula, use the formula bar for long formulas, and press Enter to confirm.

  3. Format and organise your data

Use the toolbar for fonts, colours, borders and number formats. Sort, filter, freeze the header row and switch between worksheets with the tabs.

  4. Download your Excel file

Choose Download .xlsx to save a workbook that opens in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers, or Export CSV for the current sheet.

Edit Excel files online without Microsoft Office

You don’t need a Microsoft 365 subscription or a desktop copy of Excel to work with a spreadsheet. Excel Editor Online gives you a full spreadsheet grid, a formula bar and the formatting tools you already know, inside any modern web browser. Open an XLSX file, edit it and download a new workbook that opens in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc or Apple Numbers.

Why use a browser-based Excel editor?

  • Nothing to install. The editor loads like any web page, so it works on computers where you can’t install software, such as school, library or work machines.
  • No account or upload. Many online spreadsheet tools ask you to sign in and upload your workbook to cloud storage first. Here, your file is read directly by your browser.
  • Fast for quick jobs. Fixing a typo, updating a price or adding a row takes seconds instead of waiting for a desktop app to start.
  • One tool for every format. Open .xlsx, .xlsm, .xls, .ods, .csv and .tsv files in the same place, then save as .xlsx or CSV.

Excel formulas and functions you can use

The built-in calculation engine supports more than 150 Excel functions and recalculates every dependent cell as soon as you change a value. Start typing after = and the editor suggests matching functions and shows each argument as you go. Supported functions include:

  • Math and statistics: SUM, AVERAGE, MIN, MAX, COUNT, COUNTA, ROUND, ROUNDUP, MEDIAN, STDEV, LARGE, SMALL, RANK, SUMPRODUCT and SUBTOTAL
  • Conditional totals: SUMIF, SUMIFS, COUNTIF, COUNTIFS, AVERAGEIF, AVERAGEIFS, MAXIFS and MINIFS
  • Logic: IF, IFS, IFERROR, IFNA, AND, OR, NOT, XOR, SWITCH and CHOOSE
  • Lookup and reference: VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, OFFSET, INDIRECT, ROW and COLUMN
  • Text: CONCAT, TEXTJOIN, LEFT, RIGHT, MID, LEN, TRIM, UPPER, LOWER, PROPER, SUBSTITUTE, FIND, SEARCH, TEXT and VALUE
  • Date and time: TODAY, NOW, DATE, YEAR, MONTH, DAY, WEEKDAY, EDATE, EOMONTH, DATEDIF, NETWORKDAYS and WORKDAY
  • Finance: PMT, PV, FV, NPER, NPV and IRR

Relative and absolute cell references (A1, $A$1) work just as they do in Excel – press F4 while editing a formula to switch between them – and references to other sheets such as Sheet2!B4 are supported too.

Formatting, worksheets and data tools

Make your workbook easy to read with bold, italic, underline and strikethrough text, font sizes and families, text and fill colours, cell borders, horizontal and vertical alignment, wrapped text and merged cells. Number formats cover currency, accounting, percentages, decimals, scientific notation, dates, times and durations.

To organise larger tables, freeze the top row or first column, sort a range from A to Z or Z to A, add a filter to show only the rows you need, and use find and replace to update values across the sheet. You can insert, delete, hide and resize rows and columns, and drag the fill handle to continue number, date and month series.

Edit Excel files on Windows, Mac, Chromebook and mobile

Because it runs in the browser, the editor works the same way on Windows, macOS, ChromeOS and Linux in Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox and Safari. On an iPhone, iPad or Android device you can open a spreadsheet from your files app, make changes and download the result. That makes it a practical Excel viewer and editor for Chromebooks and Macs that don’t have Microsoft Office installed.

Your spreadsheets stay private

Your files are never uploaded. Opening, editing, calculating and saving all happen on your device, and the spreadsheet libraries and fonts the editor uses are served from this website rather than third-party services. Your current workbook is autosaved only in your own browser so you don’t lose work if you refresh the page. Read our privacy policy for the details.

Good to know before you start

Excel Editor Online focuses on data, formulas and formatting. It doesn’t support charts, images, pivot tables, conditional formatting, data validation or VBA macros, and it can’t open password-protected workbooks. When you edit a workbook that uses those features, keep your original file and use the editor for the changes you need to make.

Frequently asked questions about editing Excel online

Is Excel Editor Online free?

Yes. You can open, edit and download spreadsheets without paying or creating an account.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Your file is read and edited in your browser. Your work is autosaved in this browser so a refresh doesn't lose it, but it isn't synced anywhere, so download your file when you're done.

Can I edit an XLSX file without Microsoft Excel?

Yes. Open the file, change cells, formulas and formatting, then download it as XLSX or CSV.

Which formulas are supported?

More than 150 functions, including SUM, AVERAGE, IF, IFS, IFERROR, VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, SUMIF(S), COUNTIF(S), TEXT, LEFT, CONCAT, TEXTJOIN, DATE, EOMONTH, NETWORKDAYS, PMT and ROUND. References to other sheets work too. Functions that aren't supported show #NAME? but are kept when you download.

Will my formatting be kept?

Fonts, colours, borders, number formats, alignment, merged cells, column widths, row heights and frozen panes are kept for .xlsx files. Charts, images, pivot tables, conditional formatting and macros are not, so keep your original file.

Is there a size limit?

There's no fixed limit; the editor shows only the rows on screen, so large sheets scroll smoothly. Very large workbooks (hundreds of thousands of cells) depend on your device's memory, and autosave is skipped for workbooks over about 4 MB.

Can I edit Excel files on my phone or tablet?

Yes. Excel Editor Online works in the browser on iPhone, iPad and Android devices. Tap a cell to select it and double-tap to edit. For larger spreadsheets, a tablet or computer gives you more room to work.

Do I need a Microsoft or Google account?

No. Unlike Excel for the web or Google Sheets, you don't need to sign in or upload your file to cloud storage. Open the page and start editing straight away.

Can I convert a CSV file to Excel?

Yes. Open the CSV file, make any changes you need, then choose Download .xlsx. The editor detects comma, semicolon and tab separators and turns numbers and dates into real values you can calculate with.

Can I open password-protected Excel files?

Not at the moment. Encrypted workbooks can't be opened in the browser editor. Remove the password in the app you used to protect the file, then open it here.

Can several people edit the same spreadsheet at once?

No. Excel Editor Online is a private, single-user editor, so there is no real-time collaboration. To share your work, download the file and send it like any other Excel workbook.
